In a way, Mother Teresa's beliefs and experiences in her life have shaped her identity and who she was. Because she was a Christian, this shaped her beliefs as they were based upon the Christian teachings. Her experiences such as her 'call within a call' changed who she was and affected her in a good way.
Being a Christian meant that she shared many beliefs and values as other Christians did. She believed in one deity and she believed in the Ten Commandments given to Moses by God. But this didn't mean she didn't respect other people's religions. She believed everyone was equal and that people were allowed to believe in whatever they wanted to believe in. This shaped her identity as what people believe is what they think and act. If a person believed that everyone was equal, that person would never discriminate against others or think in a negative way involving that. Mother Teresa never disrespected someone because of their race, age or gender. Being a loving and caring woman is what we identified her as. She showed others and society that she was loving by acting on her beliefs which were that to love everyone. Mother Teresa believed that nobody should be left behind, and that's why she never turned down someone asking for help or the children that were abandoned. This shaped her as a person and made her grow spiritually. |
Mother Teresa's 'call within a call' is what dramatically changed her life. She heard God's voice telling her to leave Loreto and work in the slums. With the aid of seeing the poor slum-dwellers suffer, she set out to change this and make a difference within Calcutta. She disliked seeing innocent people suffer from her window overlooking the slums, and this is what motivated her to make a difference. How she responded to God is what we identify her as someone who obeys God and as someone who says yes to God's will. She followed in Christ's footsteps and said yes to God without hesitation.
